MaTia Hughes is from Charleston, South Carolina. She moved to Georgia in high school and graduated from North Gwinnett High School. During her high school career, she was a 4-year Varsity letter in volleyball, and she also played basketball and softball. MaTia began playing club volleyball at the age of 12 and played at Charleston Juniors, MVP, A5 Gwinnett, and A5. MaTia attended New York University as the starting libero for two seasons. Afterward, MaTia transferred to West Virginia University where she played for her final two seasons as a defensive specialist. After graduating, MaTia attended Wake Forest University School of Law. While there, she played and helped coach the club volleyball team on campus. After graduating, MaTia moved back to Atlanta to further her career. She began coaching at Sugar Hill Christian Academy as a head coach for the middle school team. In the fall of 2020, MaTia began coaching for Atlanta Extreme. In the summer of 2021, MaTia became the Director of Volleyball Operations and Head Varsity Coach at Notre Dame Academy. When MaTia is not in the gym, she loves to travel and hang out with her family and friends. MaTia currently lives in Atlanta, GA.
